Project Description

Client:

Auckland Council

Project Value:

$154 million

Auckland City’s Britomart Transport Centre was the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by a local body in New Zealand and was the first underground diesel railway station in the world.  The project was a key component of the Auckland Regional Land Transport Strategy and comprises:

  • A five platform underground rail station which returns trains back into the CBD
  • A bus interchange with facilities on the street surrounding the Central Post Office
  • The restoration and modification of the Central Post Office into the transport hub
  • The Concourse, an underground pedestrian walkway linking the station to Queen Elizabeth Square
  • Streetscape replacement including the upgrade of Queen Elizabeth Square

We had to draw on our international experience to provide cost estimates for building the world’s first underground diesel train station, on reclaimed land.

Once the budget was set, we had to cost control the design phases through until tender.  Once tendered we cost managed the construction and all variations, allowing for a high degree of end-cost certainty.  During one stage of the project, formal cost reports were being issued fortnightly to allow constant monitoring of the budget.
