Roading Infrastructure
The Ōtaki to north of Levin project involves the extension of SH1’s northernmost section of the Wellington Northern Corridor. The project involves a new 24km four lane highway, with separated shared path running the full length of the highway and linking in with the paths being built as part of the Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway and Ōtaki to Peka Peka Expressway.
Prior to the project's initiation, the roads in the area were/still are considered some of the most dangerous to drive in New Zealand, with 49 deaths and serious injuries having occurred between 2012 and 2017. The new highway seeks to dramatically improve the safety and resilience of the transport network connecting Ōtaki and Levin, and the wider region, as well as increasing the transport choice for the area’s growing population.
The new highway will provide enhanced resilience to the road network and construction is planned to commence in 2025.

The project includes new cow underpasses, bridges and roundabouts, over 4,674,000 m3 cut and fill, 50 large drainage culverts, 6 river and stream crossing bridges, 1 interchange, 7 overbridges, 1 rail bridge, 1 footbridge, 6 farm access underpasses and approximately 6,545,000 plants.
