Papakura to Pukekohe
$420m
Rail Infrastructure
This $420m highly collaborative project between KiwiRail, Auckland Transport and Auckland One Rail extended the electrified rail network by approximately 20km from Papakura to Pukekohe in South Auckland. This vital infrastructure upgrade has seen the installation of 853 mast structures, an impressive 129,802 metres of overhead electric lines, 30 new track structures, and 10 new platforms to date.
Pukekohe Station is now open for passenger services, marking a huge milestone, following a two-year closure for the complex upgrades. The opening of Pukekohe Station is a transformative moment for Auckland’s rail network and supports the current and future growth of the South Auckland area, as reported in 1News, Scoop and RNZ. Trains are now running every 20 minutes to Britomart. WT would like to thank KiwiRail for the programme and project management opportunity to help deliver this complex transport infrastructure project and achieve operational service on Monday 3 Feb 2025.
"Undertaking major infrastructure upgrades, whilst keeping the line open for freight trains, Te Huia and the Northern Explorer, has taken complex planning and hard work and we’re proud of the work our team has accomplished."
David Gordon, KiwiRail Chief Asset Development Officer
WT were engaged to manage the overall Papakura to Pukekohe programme of projects from November 2023 to the present, with the responsibility of ensuring that all major milestones were successfully met. This comprehensive programme included a variety of critical projects, such as the installation and upgrading of overhead line equipment, track infrastructure, signal systems, the development of Pukekohe Station, and the integration and assurance of these assets.
In addition, WT took on the role of project manager for the handover and completion of Pukekohe Station assets, which involved coordinating and overseeing the finalisation of key elements like the station itself, the stabling yard, and the operators’ facility.
Moreover, WT was responsible for managing a diverse range of minor capital works, both within and beyond the rail corridor, ensuring the successful delivery of these projects alongside the larger undertakings within the Papakura to Pukekohe programme.
